WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A young Hoya men?s tennis squad was defeated in a four-hour battle by a veteran GW Colonial squad Friday afternoon at the McDonough Courts. The Hoyas competed hard in their first dual match of the young season.
In the doubles competition that started the match, the Hoyas came through with strong play from the #2 and #3 teams. At #2 doubles the Florida connection of Scott Faust (Miami, Fl./Ransom Everglades) and Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, Fl./Melbourne Central Catholic) downed GW's Weigert and Daniels 8-2. At #3 doubles Ryan Peisel (Chicago Ill./Savannah Country Day School) and Eric Conrad (Gloucester, Mass./ St. John's Prep) won a tightly contested 9-7 match against Colonial's Warner and Raisbek.
Holding a 1-0 lead going into the singles competition, the Hoyas played very hard, but GW had all the answers winning #1-#4 singles in straight sets. At #1 Dennis Cravedi (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) fell to Matt Hane 6-4,6-4. At #2 singles Conrad fell to Matt Treadgold 6-4,6-1. At #3 singles Faust fell to Jake Jopling 6-4,7-5. At #4 singles Peisel fell to Marius Weigert 6-4,6-4. Only Hoya Erik Bildman (Brookline Mass./ Roxbury Latin School) was able to come through with a singles victory, a solid 6-4,6-4 over Gordon Daniels.
Next on the Hoyas' fall schedule, the squad will split up with several Hoyas competing at the ITA Regional Championships at Cornell University, including Hoyas #1 singles Cravedi. The balance of the squad will travel to Norfolk, Va. to compete in the Old Point National Bank Championships sponsored by Old Dominion University. Play at both events begins Friday morning and continues through the weekend.
