The Skinny
Georgetown and George Washington open the 2003-04 women?s college hoops season tonight in the Charles E. Smith Center. This will be the third time that the two D.C. programs have opened a season against each other. GW won the 1998-99 season opener 72-54 at home and GU won the 1979-80 affair 74-67 in McDonough Gym. The overall series leans toward GW who owns a 16-13 advantage. Georgetown is on a two-game winning streak against the Colonials winning last season?s matchup 70-65 and winning the 2001-02 contest 78-57.
Georgetown enters the season with four of five starters returning but lost five letterwinners to graduation. With the exception of All-America candidate Rebekkah Brunson and second year player Varda Tamoulianis the Hoyas are small with only one other player over six foot. What GU does bring to the table is a plethora of guards. Heading the list is GU?s all-time three point threat Mary Lisicky. Joining her will be returnees Sarah Jenkins and Carmen Bruce plus transfer Bethany LeSueur.
GW is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance and also returns four of five to its starting lineup. Leading the way for the Colonials are leading scorer Cathy Joens and top rebounder Ugo Oha. Both players are in their final season at GW and earned Preseason All-Atlantic 10 First Team honors.
