The Hoyas opened the 2003-04 season with a bang on 11/21/03, defeating the visiting Grambling State Tigers by a score of 83-36. The 36 points is the fewest the Hoyas have allowed since the 1986-87 season game with Boston College. Gerald Riley, who paced all scorers with 24 points, also garnered 6 boards and 2 steals during his 24 minutes on the floor. Gerald was 3 of 4 from the stripe, 8 of 12 from the field and a perfect 5 for 5 from beyond the arc. Brandon Bowman and Darrel Owens scored 12 and 10 respectively, and each pulled down 8 caroms to pace the Hoyas in rebounding. Brandon also tied Sead Dizdarevic to lead the team in rejections as each had 4 blocks.
The Hoyas jumped out to an early 15-0 lead with Riley hitting 3 consecutive treys, Bowman following with a three and a two and Owens scoring a free throw before the Tigers could get on the board. By intermission Riley was 7-9 from the field, 5 of 5 from beyond the arc and 2 of 2 from the line for 21 points in 16 minutes. The rest of the Hoyas were not far behind, shooting better than 60 percent from the field (20-33) more than 63% from beyond the arc (7-11) and nearly 85% from the stripe (11-13) for a total of 58 points. The Tigers were held to 16 points on 16.7% shooting (5-30) while being outrebounded 24-16.
For the game the Hoyas shot 54% from the field, 50% from beyond the arc and 66.7 % from the stripe. Georgetown forced nine more turnovers than they gave up (24-15), and had 9 more blocks than the Tigers. GU held Grambling to 23.2% from the field and 22.7% from beyond the arc.
