Georgetown won at home on 11/29/03, defeating Delaware State 63-54 at the MCI Arena. Brandon Bowman set a career high, leading all scorers with 30 points on 9 of 15 shooting from the field and 11 of 12 from the stripe. Courtland Freeman added 13 points while pacing the Georgetown rebounders with 6 boards. Gerald Riley added 11 tallies to round out the trio of Hoyas in double figures.
Rather than the flight of the bumblebee, the Hornets buzzed along at a very deliberate pace. Scoring repeatedly as the shot clock expired, the visitors kept the pace glacially slow throughout the opening period and their control of the tempo frustrated the Hoyas. Rushing shots and rebounding poorly, the Hoyas trailed by as many as 7 with less than 4 minutes in the half. Finally with 2:16 remaining Georgetown found its trapping press and established a 2-point lead until a 3 pointer in the closing seconds gave the Hornets a 26-25-halftime lead.
In the second stanza the Hoyas continued to use their trapping defense to frustrate the Hornets who then rushed some shots of their own. The Hoyas also forced 17 turnovers, which, combined with the 11 they caused in the first half made for 28 giveaways by the visitors.
For the game the Hoyas grabbed 17 steals (11 more than they allowed) but lost the battle of the boards 22-35. The Hoyas shot 42%, while Delaware State hit 48.8% of their attempts. Georgetown continued to produce from the stripe, hitting 20 of 26 for 76.9%. The final score was 63-54.
