In a coming out party for Georgetown?s big man, the Hoyas beat Howard by a score of 89-58 at the MCI Arena on 12/20/03. Courtland Freeman led the Hoyas? scoring with a career high 21 points on 6 of 8 from the field and 9 of 11 from the stripe. He had 6 rebounds and 6 blocks (another career high) as well as 2 steals and an assist. Gerald Riley scored 17 points, Brandon Bowman added 16 and Darrel Owens rounded out the quartet in double figuresby tying his career high with 14. Brandon and Ashanti Cook each grabbed 7 boards to pace GU?s rebounding effort.
After falling behind by 2 in the opening seconds, the Hoyas went on a 14-3 tear over the next 3 minutes. Howard traded baskets with the Hoyas for the next four minutes until Georgetown a 13-0 run and ended the period with a 17-9 effort. At Intermission the Hoyas held a 50-21 edge.
In the second half the Hoyas let the Bison wear the margin down as close as 16 (63-47, 11:01) before they got back to first half form. When Howard looked up at the scoreboard with 03:34 remaining they found themselves on the wrong end of a 30 point differential (84-54). Defensive pressure, shooting accuracy and rebounding brought the Hoyas to the winner?s circle for the 8th consecutive time. The Hoyas have now won 12 of the last 13.
For the game the Hoyas shot 53.6% from the field, 55.6% from beyond the arc and 80.0% from the stripe. Howard shot 38.3%, 23.1% and 52.9% respectively. Georgetown won the battle of the boards 41-28.
