Georgetown v. Maryland Women's Basketball
Tue., Dec. 30, 2003
Surf-N-Slam Tournament
Jenny Craig Pavilion; San Diego, Calif.
The Skinny
Georgetown and Maryland meet in the consolation round of the third annual Surf-N-Slam Tournament held at the University of San Diego. The Hoyas fell in the first round to host San Diego 65-58, while Maryland lost to #4/3 Texas Tech 65-53. This will mark the eighth meeting between the D.C. metropolitan schools with Maryland owning a 7-0 series lead. The last time the two teams faced off was in a WNIT First Round affair at the end of the 2000 season. Prior to that meeting Georgetown and Maryland had not faced each other for 13 seasons.
Georgetown?s win streak was snapped with the loss to San Diego but the Hoya defense still took care of business, holding the Toreros to under 40% shooting (37.9%) and forcing 15 turnovers. The Hoyas had four players hit double digits in the scoring column for the first time all season as Carmen Bruce (14), Varda Tamoulianis (13), Bethany LeSueur (11) and Rebekkah Brunson (10) all contributed. Brunson continues to be GU?s top go-to player, leading the Hoyas in 12 statistical categories, including scoring, rebounding, blocks and field goals made and attempted.
Maryland lost for the third time this season after falling to Texas Tech. The Terps are led by two freshmen as guards Shay Doron and Kalika France score 14.0 and 10.6 points each, respectively. Maryland has shot under 40% only one time this year and that was in a 63-43 loss to Virginia Tech.
