Hoyas Defeat Spartans 76-53

12/3/2003

Georgetown won its 5th consecutive game of the 2003-04 season on 12/03/03 when they defeated Norfolk State 76-53.  Gerald Riley paced all scorers with 25 points, Brandon Bowman poured in 19 and grabbed 8 boards, Darrell Owens added 14 tallies and led the team in steals with 5 while Ashanti Cook led the team in rebounding with 10 boards. Ashanti also scored 8 points and led the team in assists with 6. Hicks and Dunkley combined for 32 points for the visitors.

In the opening stanza there were 4 lead changes and the largest  margin was 7 as the Hoyas outrebounded the Spartans 23-14 but gave up 11 turnovers. Each time the Hoyas seemed primed for a run, the visitors would hit a three or make a steal and nip the Georgetown bloom in the bud.  By the end of the first frame GU held a slim 32-30 lead.

The second half, however saw a revitalized Hoya defense step up. Within 5 minutes the Georgetown lead was 10. Two and a half minutes later it was 16, and with 8:03 remaining the Hoyas were up by 23. Substituting liberally, Coach Esherick used 12 players as shooting accuracy improved as defensive intensity increased.

For the game the Hoyas shot 48.3% and held the Spartans to 39.6%. Georgetown won the battle of the boards 38-32, forced 26 turnovers and made 17 steals. The only let down for the Hoyas involved free-throw shooting where they only hit 65.2%.
