Georgetown (16-14) won its first round game at Tennessee (17-12) on 3/18/03 by a score of 70-60. Mike Sweetney produced his 37th career double-double, pacing all scorers with 17 points and all rebounders with 14 caroms. Mike also had 4 blocks, 3 assists and 2 steals. Ashanti Cook set a career high in scoring with 16 points on 7 of 12 shooting (including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc). Gerald Riley added 15 tallies and Victor Samnick rounded out the quartet of Hoyas in double figures with 11 points.
In the first frame the Hoyas? defense kept them in the game. Shooting 33% to the Vols? 37.5%, GU trailed in the rebound category 17-23 but was only down 1 point (26-27) based in part on forcing 14 turnovers while giving up 8 and leading in the steals category 7-2. The other major reason Georgetown was still in the game was Ashanti Cook who scored 11 points in the half on 5 of 6 shooting.
The Hoyas opened the second half with an 11-3 run and never looked back. Although the Volunteers narrowed the gap to 3 (54-51) with 6:45 remaining, Georgetown put together another scoring surge (12-2) to move the bulge back to double figures and keep the game out of reach.
For the game the Hoyas shot 36.9% to Tennessee?s 35.7%. Georgetown won the battle of the boards 42-41 and forced 19 turnovers while only giving up 10. The Hoyas? win in the 1st round marks the 21st time the Hoyas have advanced in post season play.
