UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Four Richmond players scored in double-figures to lead the University of Richmond to a 79-65 win over Georgetown University in first round WNIT action at the Robins Center tonight. Georgetown ends the 2002-03 season with a 15-14 overall mark.
Georgetown?s Mary Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) led all scorers with 25 points, including 17 in the first half, and Sarah Jenkins (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) chipped in 15.
In first half action, Richmond took a 13-9 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining. Georgetown used a series of four three-point baskets, including three from Lisicky, during a four-minute span to build a five-point advantage at the 5:42 mark. The game reached its fourth tie with three minutes remaining but the Spiders closed the half with two shots from beyond the arc to hold a 35-33 halftime edge.
The Hoyas took their only lead in the second half with 16:47 left in the game off a jumper from Jenkins. The Spiders held onto a two-to-four point advantage throughout the following four minutes of play until Richmond's Araceli Gil hit the shot of the evening. The Spider freshman was knocked to the ground after a hitting her fourth three-point basket and connected on the foul shot to give the Spiders a seven-point advantage with 13 minutes remaining.
Georgetown used a 7-4 scoring run to cut the deficit to three but the Spiders scored 11 of the game's next 15 points to take their first double-digit lead at the 3:32 point. Richmond hit six-of-eight free throws down the stretch to take the 79-65 win.
