Georgetown (14-12, 6-9) won on 03/03/03, defeating West Virginia (13-14, 4-11) on the road by a score of 69-67. Gerald Riley paced all scorers with 23 points, hitting 5 of 10 threes. Mike Sweetney led all rebounders with 16 boards, all shot blockers with 5 rejections and scored 18 points for his 35th double-double. Brandon Bowman contributed 11 points and had a career high in assists with 5.
West Virginia established their only lead of the game when a free throw at the 19:33 mark gave them a 1-0 edge. The Hoyas then went on an 11-0 run over the next two minutes. The Hoyas led by as many as 13 in the first frame on the strength of 50% shooting from the field, while allowing the Mountaineers to hit only 32.3%. GU outrebounded WVU 23-15 and took a 39-28 edge into the locker room at intermission.
In the second stanza Georgetown?s double digit lead lasted until 13:35. When the Mountaineers cut the difference down to 4 with 7:23 to play, Georgetown stormed back with a 6-0 run to go back up by 10 with 5 :15 to play. The answering West Virginia 10-0 spurt tied the game at 63 with 1:20 remaining and may have made Hoya fans nervous, but free-throws by Bowman (1) Bethel (2) Sweetney (2) and Hall (1) combined with tough defense in the closing 2.6 seconds insured the Hoyas? sixth conference win and a place in the BIG EAST Tournament in New York.
For the game Georgetown shot 43.6% while holding West Virginia to 38.3%. The Hoyas won the battle of the boards 39-33.
