4/10/2003 Georgetown University Men?s basketball Head Coach Craig Esherick announced today that Mike Sweetney, as allowed by NCAA rules, will determine his value as a professional basketball player by making himself available for the 2003 NBA draft.
?I met with Mike and his parents yesterday. We discussed Mike?s future and agreed on a prudent course for determining Mike?s professional value. Mike has not hired an agent or withdrawn from school. He will continue as a student at Georgetown, completing the second semester of his Junior year. He will continue attending class and will take his exams. When the semester is over we will examine where he would go in the NBA draft. He will then determine whether to commit to the NBA or return to school.?
?Mike and his family are approaching this issue in a prudent manner and I am in full support of this process. Mike is going to continue as a student and, as such, has requested that his privacy be respected and that he be allowed the time necessary for school work. He will not be available for interviews.?
?Because my involvement in the process of determining Mike?s professional value would be affected by my interaction with the news media, I am also declining interview opportunities on this subject.?
