The Georgetown University Women?s Tennis Team lost in their final match of the season at Rutgers on Sunday, 7-0. The loss means the Hoyas finish the year in seventh place in the BIG EAST, one spot shy of qualifying for the Conference Championships. Georgetown ends the year with 5-5-1 overal record and a 4-3-1 mark in BIG EAST play.

The Scarlet Knights swept the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At first doubles, Georgetown?s sophomore duo of Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. /Torrey Pines) and Trina Snow (Sartell, Minn. /Sartell) fell to Rutgers? Weckstein and Sommerlad, 8-1. Both the second doubles team of junior Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla. /Ransom Everglades) and sophomore Monisha Ghia (Bethlehem, Pa.) and the third doubles team of junior Stephanie Sutton (Arlington, Texas /Sam Houston State) and sophomore Liora Gelblum (Cupertina, Calif. /Monta Vista) went down to their respective opponents, 8-4.

Singles proved equally as frustrating for the Hoyas, who managed to win just one set in the seven matches. Gelblum fought hard at first singles and pushed Rutgers? Weckstein to three sets, but eventually lost 6-3, 5-7, 10-6. Bartell dropped her match with Sommerlad at #2 singles, 6-4, 6-3; while at third singles Snow nearly pushed Jennifer Hellier to three sets before falling, 6-3, 7-5. Botjer lost her fourth singles match with Alina Balassa, 6-2, 6-4, while Ghia went down at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-3. In the final match, Sutton fell at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0.

The Hoyas managed to post a .500 record this season, finishing up at 5-5-1, and picking up several key BIG EAST victories along the way. Georgetown will look to build on its youth and experience beginning in the fall of 2003.
