WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Two Georgetown University baseball players, Andrew Cleary (So., Weston, Mass./Belmont Hill School) and Michael Lombardi (Jr., Brookhaven Hamlet, N.Y./St. Anthony?s), were selected to the 2003 BIG EAST Baseball All-Conference teams after voting by the league?s coaches. Cleary earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors as a utility player while Lombardi was chosen All-BIG EAST Third Team as a catcher.
Cleary played and started in 46 games during the 2003 season, splitting time in left field, at catcher and in the designated hitter slot. He was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week the final week of the season helping lead the Hoyas to a 4-1 record to close the year. Cleary led the Hoyas in numerous offensive categories, including runs (45), home runs (12), RBI (47), total bases (103), slugging percentage (.656), walks (32), and on-base percentage (.460). Cleary?s numbers also shine in the BIG EAST statistical book as he ranks third in the league in slugging percentage, ties for first in home runs, is sixth in runs batted in, ninth in on base percentage and lands in 10th for runs scored.
Lombardi saw action in all 47 games this year and recorded a team leading .374 batting average, which also places him 10th in the BIG EAST statistics. He played catcher the majority of the season and ended the 2003 campaign throwing out 12 attempted steals and finishing third on the team in fielding percentage (.983). Lombardi?s 65 hits rank him as the top Hoya this year and his 34 RBI and .456 on-base percentage both place him third amongst the Blue and Gray.
