May 27, 2003

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown University baseball announced its incoming freshman class for the 2004 season, including three pitchers and two position players hailing from California, New Jersey, Florida, and Tennessee.

Joining the Hoyas in the fall will be Trey Martin (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Loyola), Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep), Brandon Davis (La Jolla, Calif./The Bishop?s School), Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./BC Goodpasture Christian School), Mark Dutmers (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview), and Tomasso Trento (Malibu, Calif./Malibu).

RHP Martin lettered in baseball all four years at Loyola High School of Los Angeles, earning varsity MVP honors as well as being named First Team All-League.  During the 2003 regular season Martin posted an ERA of 3.10 with 49 strikeouts in 38.1 innings or work, pitching three one-hit games.  ?Trey has a chance to come in and start on the hill,? says Hoyas? head coach Pete Wilk.  ?He?ll make a positive impression on our pitching staff and could be a dual player with his good hitting.?  Martin has also played with the SOCAL STARS in the Connie Mack Blair Field Division as well as competing with the South Bay Sharks Baseball Club and Atlanta Braves Scout Team.  Martin also played quarterback at Loyola, earning two varsity letters.

RHP Chandler is a three-year honor roll student at Rutgers Prep, named First Team All-Prep B three times, First Team All-Prep two times, and twice chosen team Pitcher of the Year.  Chandler has also racked up three All-Patriot Conference honors.  ?Trey and Erick both bolster our pitching line-up,? coach Wilk said.  ?Erick has a chance to start immediately.  He has the stuff for it.? In his senior season, Chandler posted a record of 8-2 with 87 strikeouts and a 1.63 ERA in 60 innings.  Erick plays for the Central Jersey Clippers in the summer.

Catcher Davis earned a number of awards during his high school career at The Bishops School, named Second Team All-Coastal League twice, Coastal League All Star Team catcher twice, First Team All-Coastal League his junior season, and Baseball Rookie of the Year his freshman season.  Davis also claimed the Baseball Coach?s Award for Outstanding Catcher and Pitcher his sophomore and junior seasons.  ?Brandon is the heir apparent,? said Wilk.  ?He?s a strong defender and a good athlete who will surprise some people with his bat.  He?ll be a good catcher in the BIG EAST, eventually.?  Off the field Davis earned the San Diego Union-Tribune scholar athlete award his junior and senior year as well as making the 2002-03 National Honor Roll.  In 21 games this season Davis hit .416 with 10 doubles, three home runs and 51 total bases.  Davis was flawless in the field, recording 63 putouts and 29 assists.  Davis also played basketball and football, earning a number of awards as a linebacker.

Outfielder de Grijs is a four-year varsity baseball and varsity football player from BC Goodpasture Christian school and member of the 2001 and 2002 District Baseball Champion Cougars as well as the 1999 and 2001 State Football Championship team.  Earning All-District baseball honors three times and District MVP his senior season, de Grijs is also a member of the National Honor Society, ranked fourth in his class and appearing as a Who?s Who Among American High School Students.  ?Derek is an outstanding athlete who has a chance to win an outfield spot as a freshman,? said coach Wilk.  He will continue to upgrade our offense with his speed.?

LHP Dutmers lettered three years at Riverview High School, posting a 3-1 record his senior season with 31 strikeouts in 28.1 innings of work.  Last summer with the Riverview Baseball Club, Dutmers fanned 48 in 37 innings while giving up just six earned runs.  ?Mark is a big, strong leftie who has a great future ahead of him,? commented Wilk.  In the classroom Dutmers excelled as a four-year scholar athlete, posting a GPA 3.0 or above.

Also joining the Hoyas for the 2004 season will be Trento, a middle infielder from Malibu High School.
