WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown?s women?s tennis team participated in the Bucknell Invitational this past weekend, September 20-21, along with seven other teams, including Marist, Bloomsburg, Bucknell, Pittsburgh, Loyola, Villanova and Duquesne. The tournament was broken up into four flights of singles and two flights of doubles.
GU?s top performer was Monisha Ghia (Bethlehem, Pa./ Moravian Academy) who advanced to the finals of the ?B? singles draw. Ghia lost 2-6, 0-6 in the final to Duquesne?s Jackie Hughes but earned three victories prior to the final, winning round one 6-0, 6-2 over Marist, taking a 0-6, 7-5, (10-4) second round victory against Pittsburgh?s Emily Hughes and securing a 6-3, 6-2 semifinal win over Bucknell?s Samantha Berthod. Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./ Immaculate Heart Academy) won two matches in the back draw of flight ?B? singles after falling 6-3, 5-7 (8-10) in the opening round against Hayley Hughes of Pittsburgh.
Georgetown?s two flight ?A? singles players, Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla./ Ransom Everglades) and Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./ Torrey Pines), advanced to the second round. Botjer made a run to the semifinals before falling 5-7, 1-6 to Villanova?s Candice Carlin. Bartell lost in the second round to Bucknell?s Tanya Sichko, 3-6, 6-7 (4).
In their first collegiate matches Georgetown?s Nora Gardner (Greenwich, Conn./ Deerfield Academy (Mass.)) and Sana Malouf (McLean, Va./ St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) competed in the Flight ?C? singles competition. Gardner won her first round over Duquesne?s Julie Wagner, 1-6, 7-5, (10-7) and lost in the second round, 6-1, 5-7, (7-10) to Bloomberg?s Emily Murphy. Malouf fell in her first match 3-6, 3-6 to Villanova?s Leighann Reilly but earned her first win with a 8-4 victory in the back draw against Pitt?s Konita Jude.
Also donning the Blue and Gray for their first matches were Kristen Dew (Nashville, Tenn.) and Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius Prep (Chicago)). Both players advanced to the Flight ?D? singles semifinals before each fell to Villanova entrants. Dew won her first round match after Loyola?s Lauren McGraw retired while Boyle took down Taryn Cappellini of Villanova 6-2, 7-5. In round two Dew had a tight 7-6 (9), 6-3 match while Boyle recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win. In the semis Dew fell 1-6, 1-6 and Boyle lost 3-6, 2-6.
The Hoyas placed a doubles team in both the ?A? flight and the ?B? flight with Botjer and Malouf teaming up in the ?A? draw and Bartell and Dew competing in the ?B? event. The Bartell/Dew duo won their first round match 8-5 before losing their next match 4-8. Botjer and Malouf fell in the opening round 3-8 but earned two consecutive victories in the back draw, 8-6 and 9-8 (4).
Georgetown?s women?s tennis team plays in the D.C. Metro Intercollegiate Tennis Championships starting this Friday, September 26 until Tuesday, September 30. The matches will be held on Georgetown?s McDonough Tennis Complex and at American University.
