Hoyas Fall to #1 ranked UConn, 94-70

Georgetown (10-3, 1-2) lost a 70-94 final on 1/14/04 at Gampel Pavillion to #1 ranked Connecticut (14-1, 2-0). Ashanti Cook led the Hoyas? scoring with 18 points and the team?s assist with 4. Brandon Bowman scored 17 points on the way to his 2nd consecutive double-double, (third this season) as he paced GU?s rebounding effort with 11. Gerald Riley also scored 17 points for the Hoyas and Courtland Freeman rounded out the quartet in double figures with 10 tallies.

The opening minutes looked promising as the Hoyas converted their only miss to establish a 5 point lead 11-6. Unfortunately, the number 1 ranking is not awarded by lottery as the Huskies quickly demonstrated with a 15-0 run. Although Georgetown reduced the double digit deficit five times, Connecticut put together an 11-0 run to move the game further out of reach. The score was 30-56 at intermission.

In the second frame the Hoyas took better care of the ball, limiting their turnovers to 1, while improving their shooting percentage from 31.4% to 48.4% but where unable to overcome Connecticut?s size advantage. The Huskies scored 16 more points in the paint pulled down 16 more rebounds and scored 14 more 2nd chance points on their way to a 70-94 final.

For the game the Hoyas shot 39.4% from the field while Connecticut hit 52.8%. The Huskies won the battle of the boards 47-31. Georgetown did outshoot UCONN from long range (43.8% to 35.7%) and from the stripe (73.3% to 68.4%).
