The 20,193 of the sellout crowd at the MCI Center and the national audience watching on CBS saw Georgetown (11-4, 2-3) drop a 66-85 final to #1 Duke (16-1, 5-0) on 1/24/04. Brandon Bowman paced Georgetown?s scoring with 19, led all rebounders with 9 boards, led GU?s thieves with 3 steals and Hoya blockers with 2 rejections while dishing out a pair of assists. Ashanti Cook contributed 13 points and grabbed 8 caroms while dishing out 5 assists. Gerald Riley hit 2 of 3 from long range, 4 of 4 from the stripe while adding 12 to Georgetown?s total and Darrel Owens rounded out the quartet of Hoyas in double figures with 10.
The Hoyas opened the game well and were even with Duke through the first 8 minutes. With 7:02 on the clock the Hoyas were only down 2 (19-21) which was, unfortunately when the wheels came off. Duke put together a 27-5 scoring spree (based on 60.6% accuarcy from the field), that knocked the Hoyas out of contention.
In the second stanza the Hoyas? woes continued in spite of vastly improved shooting stats (32.3% from the field in the first half and 55.6% in the second half). Turnovers by the Hoyas and strong inside play by the Blue Devils combined to put GU 34 points into the deficit column before the tide turned, but the Hoyas never threw in the towel. Closing with a 10-2 run by Georgetown, the final was 66-85.
