PISCATAWAY, NJ ? In a closely-contested game that saw 11 lead changes and four ties in the second half, Rutgers (11-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) got by Georgetown (9-8, 3-4 BIG EAST) 67-64 before 4,011 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on Sunday, Jan. 25. Georgetown's All-America candidate Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) registered 10 rebounds which places her number one on the Hoya career list with 950, surpassing Leni Wilson's (1989-93) total of 948.
After an offensive rebound by RU's Shalicia Hurns, Chelsea Newton banked in a jumper from the foul line with 9.6 left on the clock to give the Scarlet Knights a 66-64 advantage. Georgetown called a timeout with 6.5 remaining, but the ensuing inbounds slid out of bounds and the Hoyas were forced to foul Cappie Pondexter. She sank one of two free throws to give Rutgers a three-point advantage (67-64) with less than four seconds on the clock and Georgetown was unable to get off a final shot as time expired.
Neither team was able to build a lead larger than four points in the second half as the two squads answered each other?s baskets all game long. Unanimous preseason All-BIG EAST first team selection Brunson led the Hoyas in points (19) and rebounds (10), plus had three blocks. Mary Lisicky (Jr., Whitehall, Pa./ Whitehall) hit four threes in the game and finished with 16 points and Carmen Bruce (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) heated up in the second stanza and totaled 12 popints. Pondexter led four Scarlet Knights in double figures with 17 points, while Newton was 5-for-5 in the second half to score 10 of her 12 points in the game. The Scarlet Knights held a 33-29 advantage under the boards.
RU took control early in the game, building an 11-point (24-13) lead on the strength of Pondexter?s 10 points, but Georgetown clawed back into the contest with a 13-2 run to tie the game at 26-26 with 3:38 to go in the first. The two teams traded baskets, but Rutgers regained the lead (29-28) on a Nikki Jett free throw and looked as if it would head to the half on top. After Aquisha Cahoe failed to control a rebound under the Georgetown basket, Lisicky hit a jumper with six seconds remaining on the clock that would give the Hoyas a one-point edge at the break.
The Hoyas' next game is at West Virginia on Wednesday, January 28th, at 7 p.m. Georgetown returns home on January 31st to face Villanova at 1 p.m. at McDonough Arena.
