Georgetown Downs Miami 87-80 in OT

The Hoyas (12-5, 3-4) defeated the Hurricanes (13-8, 3-4) on the road in overtime on 1/31/04 by a score of 87-80. Gerald Riley paced all scorers with a career high 35 points. Gerald shot 13 of 17 (76.4%) from the field, 3 of 5 (60%) from beyond the arc and 6 of 6 (100%) from the sin stripe. Gerald also led the Hoyas in steals with 4 and had 2 assists and 4 rebounds. Brandon Bowman, who led the team in rebounding with 8, scored 22 points for the Blue and Gray, while Darrel Owens added 14 points.

            The first half was a balanced affair with neither squad able to pull away. Miami established an early seven point lead only to see the Hoyas run off 14 unanswered to build a seven point lead of their own. The ?Canes then reduced their deficit and the game settled into a see-saw battle. At intermission the score was knotted at 29.

            In the second frame Miami built a seven point lead before an improbable 5 point play widened the gap to 12. Positioning for the rebound of a 3 point attempt by Diaz, Courtland Freeman drew a whistle as the ball dropped in. When Frisby missed the free throw, Hite got the rebound, missed and Frisby hit the put-back. Down by a dozen on the road the Hoyas reached within themselves and started a comeback. Steals by Bowman, Cook and Cook led to baskets to move GU back to within 5. With 2:03 on the clock Miami?s 12 point lead had become a 1 point deficit. With 00:27 on the clock the home team trailed by 3, but Rice hit from beyond the stripe to send the game into an extra period.

            In the overtime the Hoyas were 100% from the field and 87.5% from the stripe, outscoring Miami 14-7.  Down by 2 with 02:35 remaining, Gerald Riley hit a three, made a steal and hit a lay-up to put GU up 3. Free throws by Bowman, Cook and Cook were only answered by a lay-up by Rice to give the Hoyas an 87-80 win in overtime.

            For the game, Georgetown hit 58.8% of their shots from the field, 50% from beyond the arc and 79.2% from the stripe. Miami hit 45.7%, 30.4% and 69.2% respectively. The Hoyas lost the battle of the boards 29-35 but forced 3 more turnovers than they gave up.
