TORONTO – Representing the United States in GLOBL JAM, the Georgetown University men's basketball team couldn't hold off a second-half surge from Brazil, falling 77-73 in the gold medal game on Sunday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. With the loss, the Hoyas will leave as the silver medal team following a 2-2 week in Toronto at the international competition.
ON THE RECORD
"I think the middle of the fourth period - that's where the game was won - we had five out of six missed free throws, I thought we had two really bad turnovers and I thought that was the deciding factor. I thought [Brazil's] physicality, I thought they were fresher than we were, I thought we looked a little fatigued. At the end of the day, we came here with a mission - and I first of all want to thank [GLOBL JAM] for inviting Georgetown - I think it was an incredible experience for us as a program. I think we got better, I thought we improved. I don't know how many teams in America have played that level of competition in August. So, that's the positive thing I'm going to take from this." - Head Coach
Ed Cooley on the game and experience competing at GLOBL JAM
"We learned a lot, we learned things we need to improve, we learned about our strengths so there's a lot of positives to take away from this." -
Malik Mack on the tournament
"I feel like we definitely improved our depth … our chemistry this year is even better. Defensively, I think we are a good team. Last year, we relied a lot on Thomas (Sorber) and Micah (Peavy) defensively, but we got a lot of different guys now who can defend. I feel like we are more even on offense as well because of our depth." - Mack on this year's squad compared to the team last year at this time

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first quarter saw Brazil score first but the Hoyas retorted with seven straight sparked by an Iwuchukwu dunk followed by five points from Mack. Brazil drained a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game but Isaiah Abraham and Caleb Williams combined for six points to take a 13-6 advantage.
- The Blue & Gray continued to push as a 3-pointer from Jeremiah Williams extended the lead to 18-11 but Brazil found another gear to stage a 7-2 run to make it a one-possession game before Jayden Fort drained a trey on the right side to close the first quarter with the Hoyas up 23-18.
- The second quarter saw Brazil with the hot shooting, landing nine buckets including four treys, in the frame. Brazil thundered back after being down by as many as seven and took a 42-38 lead (1:57). GU regrouped and found an open Iwuchukwu under the basket who threw down the dunk to make it a one-possession game. After a stop on the other end the Hoyas came out of the huddle with 11.8 seconds left and Malik Mack found the bottom of the net at the buzzer to send the Hoyas into the locker room with a 43-42 lead.
- Brazil wouldn't go away and regained the lead in the third quarter, pushing ahead by four (56-52) with 4:10 remaining. A 10-3 run fueled in part by a pair of treys, one each from Mack and Harris-Smith, gave the Hoyas a 62-59 lead. However, Brazil closed the stanza on five unanswered to lead 64-62 with one quarter remaining.
- Brazil continued its run in the fourth frame scoring four unanswered points before GU was able to sink its first bucket of the quarter with 7:31 left cutting the deficit to four (68-64). Brazil's lead ballooned to as many as nine at the 4:56 mark (75-66) but the Hoyas wouldn't go away staging a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to three with just under 90 seconds left. Despite making it a one-possession game, Brazil would not relinquish the lead securing the 77-73 victory at the buzzer.
