Georgetown Defeats Brazil 76-74 to Advance to Gold Medal Game at GLOBL JAM

TORONTO – In a game that came down to the wire, the Georgetown University men's basketball team, representing the United States, defeated Brazil 76-74 in the final game of the round robin stage at GLOBL JAM on Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. With the win in Toronto, the Hoyas finish the round robin stage at 2-1 and advance to Sunday's gold medal game after tiebreaker situationals. Georgetown will face Brazil once again in the championship game that will be broadcast on ESPN+ in the United States and SportsNet in Canada at 8 p.m. ET.

ON THE RECORD
"I thought we had unselfish play from Jeremiah (Williams), nice backdoor play to Jayden Fort, offensive rebound by Jayden Fort, free throw to tie the game by Julius (Halaifonua). So those guys all redshirted last year and didn't play. So it was really exciting to see. I thought our two-point defense was unbelievable. I thought we did a great job defending. I thought we did a great job trying to share the ball, making the right play. Overall, great team win and to have a level of game we've had the last two games, and it's August 15 or 16. I'm really proud of that, really proud of that, and hopefully this pays major dividends as we continue to grow going into the season." - Head Coach Ed Cooley on today's game

"I feel like it means a lot to go out there, definitely on this stage, playing for America, but for Georgetown, having a lot of local guys stick together - I've known Swae (Malik Mack) since seventh grade, Caleb (Williams), Zay (Isaiah Abraham). I mean, [Isaiah] is like one of my best friends, so to be able to play with him in front of our families in front of a crowd like this and on a stage like this definitely means a lot." - DeShawn Harris-Smith on the DMV representation on Georgetown's roster

"Playing in tight games is just teaching us how to finish games and how to execute down the stretch." - Malik Mack on the last two games

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Vince Iwuchukwu led a quartet of Hoyas in double figures with a game-best 16 points on 63.6% (7-11) shooting from the floor. He added five rebounds and a pair of blocks to his line.
  • Jeremiah Williams chipped in 13 points on a 6-for-13 (46.2%) performance from the floor while adding four boards, four assists and one steal.
  • Malik Mack tallied 11 points with seven coming from the charity stripe. He paced the offense with seven helpers to go along with four rebounds.
  • Julius Halaifonua came off the bench to round out those in double figures with 10 points. He was a perfect 3-for-3 from inside the arc and went 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
  • Caleb Williams led Georgetown on the glass, grabbing eight rebounds in nearly 32 minutes of action.
  • Georgetown shot 42.9% (27-63) from the floor while making five 3-pointers.
  • The Hoyas outrebounded Brazil 43-33.

BRAZIL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Gabriel Landeira led a quintet in double-figure scoring with 16 points on 55.6% (5/9) shooting from the floor. Vitor Brandao added 13 while Bruno Cardoso (11), Nathan Mariano (11) and Lucas Atauri (10) rounded out those in double figures.
  • Mariano led Brazil on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds.
  • While Landeira led the squad in points, he also paced the offense with six assists on the day.
  • Brazil shot 36.8% (21/57) but knocked down 12-of-30 (40.0%) from deep.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mack got the Hoyas on the board first, tallying a bucket before a quick five-point spurt gave Brazil the lead. Another Mack bucket sparked seven unanswered from the Hoyas as Isaiah Abraham added a triple and Caleb Williams capped the effort with a basket of his own as GU led 9-5.
  • Brazil clawed its way back into the game from the charity stripe and Bruno Cardoso's bucket gave Brazil the lead. Cardoso continued to pour in the points as he tallied the last 10 points for Brazil in the first frame. Both teams traded points with the score knotted at 18 apiece after one quarter.
  • Iwuchukwu was unstoppable to start the third, throwing down a quartet of emphatic dunks to score the first eight points of the stanza for the Blue & Gray to help build a seven-point advantage (28-21) after Jeremiah Williams added a bucket with 5:47 to play.
  • Despite treys from both Caleb Williams and Jeremiah Williams, Brazil stayed within striking distance behind some well-timed 3-pointers. The Hoyas took a 38-35 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • It continued to be Jeremiah Williams and Iwuchukwu in the third frame with the duo combining for the first nine points. Halaifonua tallied six points to close the third with Georgetown taking a 55-48 lead.
  • Georgetown would build the lead to as many as 13 (63-50) but once Brazil got hot from beyond the arc, the margin between the sides narrowed. Brazil hit three-consecutive treys with three Hoya free throws sandwiched between the buckets. Brazil was able to cut the deficit to six (66-60).
  • Brazil continued to apply pressure, sinking two more 3-pointers along with two free throws giving them a one-point advantage (67-66) with 2:50 left in the contest.
  • GU was able to fend off Brazil's comeback efforts over the final three minutes with a dunk from Jayden Fort and five made free throws from Halifinoa and Mack securing the 76-74 victory and a ticket to the gold medal match on Sunday evening.
