WASHINGTON, D.C ? The Georgetown University women's soccer team (5-7, 2-4) came within 45 seconds of pushing the #1 ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (14-0, 7-0) into golden goal overtime with their perfect season in the balance. After exchanging goals with about 5 minutes left in the half, the Irish finally pulled away at the 89:16 mark with a Jen Buczowski goal with culminated a furious Irish charge that spanned the final 10 minutes of the game.
The Hoyas came out to North Kehoe field unafraid of the nation's #1 team, and played them evenly throughout the game. Although the Irish controlled the ball early, the Hoyas were able to strike first on a kick by Karen Waskewich (Fr., Laytonsville, M.D./Academy of Holy Cross) which was controlled by Nicole DePalma (Sr., Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) and finally put in by Sara Jordan (Fr., Indianapolis, I.N./North Central). Both DePalma and Waskewich were credited with assists on the play. The impressive play preceded the Hoyas' only major lapse of the game, with the Irish taking a kickoff down the field and tying the game within a minute of the Hoyas' goal.
Although the Irish out shot the Hoyas 22-12, the Hoyas put more shots on goal, recording eight to the Irish' seven. Goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) played well for the Hoyas, making five saves, including a couple impressive blocks of point-blank shots. The game was once again a physical one, with the Hoyas committing 13 fouls and the Irish committing 16. Each team also had a player served with a yellow card.
The Hoyas travel to Villanova on Friday, October 15th when they will face the Wildcats at 4 p.m
