NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- Freshmen men's tennis student-athletes Scott Maucher (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Bishop England) and Andy Clayton (Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall-St. Mark's) won the doubles championship at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational. Maucher and Clayton won four matches defeating teams from George Mason, Hofstra, Richmond and UMBC to take the title. They lost a total of only 14 games in the course of the four match-winning streak.
The men's team faced stiff competition at the Invitational as ranked teams from Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion and William and Mary sent players to the tournament. Also represented were Richmond, American, George Washington, UMBC, the Naval Academy and James Madison, teams that defeated Georgetown in 2003-04 dual match play. The Hoyas were very strong in the doubles competitions, posting a 6-2 record while in singles they were a solid 11-10 overall.
The outstanding singles performance of the weekend was turned in by junior Alex Wright (Lexington, Mass./University of St. Andrew's (Scotland)), who reached the semifinals of the Flight D Singles draw. Wright won three matches, including a second round defeat of teammate Faris AbiNader (Bethesda, Md./The Field School (D.C.)) to push himself into the semifinal.
Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) was the only other Hoya besides Wright to win three singles matches in the tournament. Killeavy was sidetracked in the first round of the main draw, but posted three victories in the consolation draw, all three wins coming on Sunday in back-to-back-to-back matches.
Erik Bildman (Brookline, Mass./Roxbury Latin), Etienne Paris (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglade), Eric Conrad (Gloucester, Mass./St. John's Prep), AbiNader and Clayton also posted singles victories during the weekend.
The Hoyas have completed team competitions for the fall of 2004. The top Hoya singles players and doubles team will compete in the ITA Regional Singles and Doubles Championships at Virginia Tech beginning Friday, October 22.
