STORRS, Conn. (AP) ? The Georgetown University women?s soccer team lost to BIG EAST opponent University of Connecticut by a score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Morrone Stadium. The loss was Georgetown's first this season in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas are now 2-1-0 against league opponents and 5-5-0 overall.
Georgetown wasted no time on the offensive attack, scoring just 4:38 into the game. The Hoyas were awarded a free kick, on which Karen Waskewich (Laytonsville,Md./Academy of Holy Cross) connected with Alexandra Hardy (Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly). Hardy found the back of the net on a diving header to give Georgetown a 1-0 lead, where the score would stand going into the half.
UConn came out on the counterattack entering the second half. At 46:39, senior forward Kristen Graczyk kicked the ball up the field to a streaking Jessica Gjertsen who directed the ball in goal to knot the score at 1-1. Just 1:09 later, UConn took the lead on a goal by sophomore Niki Cross. The third Connecticut goal came at 79:32. Graczyk found Gjertsen again, who launched the ball in for her second goal of the game to give the Huskies the 3-1 victory.
Freshman goalie Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) finished with seven saves for the Hoyas.
Georgetown (5-5-0; 2-1-0) will begin a two game home stanza, facing BIG EAST opponent Rutgers on Friday, October 8, at 3 p.m. and Notre Dame on Sunday October 10 at 1 p.m. Both games will be held on North Kehoe Field.
