BOX SCORE
WASHINGTON, D.C ? The Georgetown University women?s soccer team (5-6, 2-2) fell victim to the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (7-7, 2-3), allowing back-to-back goals late in the first half to lose 2-0.
The Scarlet Knights took the lead 30 minutes into the contest when a ball deflected off a Georgetown defender and came into the possession of Rutgers? Amanda Allessio, who quickly put it in for the Knights. Rutgers struck again three minutes later on a Carli Lloyd strike from Domenique Esposito. The first half ended with Rutgers up 2-0.
Although the Scarlet Knights didn?t have much offense from then on, they would not need it, as the Rutgers? defense held the Hoyas to just 2 shots on goal. Georgetown?s best scoring opportunity came on a cross from Shara McNeill (Avon, Conn./ Avon) to Sara Jordan (Indianapolis, I.N./North Central), but RU goalkeeper Robyn Jones was able to step out of the box and stifle the shot at its source.
The Hoyas were only outshot by a 12-10 margin, but Rutgers put 5 of those shots on goal compared to the Hoyas? 2. The game was physical on both sides, with Georgetown being whistled for 16 fouls and Rutgers being called for 10. A player on each side was also served with a yellow card.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Sunday, October 10th when they face off against the #1 ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame at 1 p.m. on North Kehoe Field.
