WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell in its second and final exhibition game, losing 77-71 to a gritty and disciplined Russian squad from UMMC Ekaterinburg. The deciding factor in the game was free throw shooting, where UMMC shot 85% while the Hoyas shot only 40% for the game.
The Hoyas were once again led offensively by Mary Lisicky (Sr., Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), who hit four three-pointers and led all scorers with 24 points. Bethany LeSueur (Jr., Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added eight assists on the offensive front for the Hoyas. Defensively, the Hoyas were led by Varda Tamoulianis (Sr., Moscow, Russia/Academy of Labour and Social Relations), who recorded three blocks and seven steals. Tamoulianis also led the Hoyas with 19 total rebounds, 14 on the defensive side. UMMC showcased a balanced offensive attack with four players scoring in double figures including Lioubov Smorodina who led UMMC with 22 points and also tallied six blocks.
UMMC came out with hot hands and out shot the Hoyas in the first half, shooting 57% to Georgetown's 37%. Freshman Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./ Coatesville) kept the Hoyas in the game by scoring 18 of her 20 points in the first half. Marlow, who also had 13 rebounds, notched her first career double-double only four minutes into the second half.
Georgetown pulled down an impressive 28 offensive rebounds en route to out-rebounding UMMC 47-44. The Hoyas also held the turnover edge, committing 13 to UMMC's 19, but that was not enough to overcome the free throw discrepancy and UMMC's overall shooting edge of 48% to 35%.
The Hoyas kick off their regular season on Friday, November 19th against local rival George Washington. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. at McDonough Arena.
