PITTSBURGH, Pa. ?Pittsburgh fell to Georgetown, 72-61, in women?s basketball Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. Pittsburgh dropped its eighth straight game and fell to 6-16 overall and 2-10 in the Big East. The Hoyas improved to 11-12 and 5-7 in the conference.
Georgetown scored the game's initial eight points thanks to two consecutive 3-pointers by Mary Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall). The first of the threes gave Lisicky her 200th of her career. The Hoyas then led by as many as 12 points, 18-6, midway through the first half before Pittsburgh mounted a rally to get back into the contest.
The Panthers closed the gap to four points, 27-23, on two free throws by Katie Histed with 2:51 remaining in the frame. However, Georgetown built the lead back to 11 points and entered halftime with a nine-point advantage, 34-25.
In the second half, Pittsburgh again clawed its way to within four points on separate occasions, but it could never get any closer. A 10-0 Hoya run after the score was 40-36 put the game in Georgetown's control at the 12:59 mark. The Hoyas upped their lead to as many as 17 points (68-51) before finishing with the 11-point victory.
For the game, the Panthers shot 34 percent (22 of 64) from the field but hit 44 percent (8 of 18) from behind the 3-point arc. Georgetown hit 56 percent (30 of 54) of its field goals, a season high, and 36 percent (4 of 11) of its 3-point attempts. Pittsburgh outrebounded the Hoyas, 39-34.
Lisicky led Georgetown with 16 points, while All-America candidate Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) and Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added 14 each. Three Hoyas, Brunson, Carmen Bruce (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schlenley) and Varda Tamoulianis (Moscow, Russia/Academy of Labour and Social Relations), recorded seven rebounds apiece.
Histed posted 13 points to lead Pittsburgh.
Georgetown comes home to face Rutgers on Saturday, February 21st, at 3 p.m.
