MONROEVILLE, Pa. ? Georgetown?s women?s tennis team battled Pittsburgh in a tightly contested match Friday afternoon February 20th at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, Pa. and fell 5-2.
The Hoyas came very close to winning the doubles competition as freshmen Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius Prep (Chicago)) and Nora Gardner (Greenwich, Conn./ Deerfield Academy (Mass.)) teamed up for an 8-4 win at #3 doubles. However, the Hoyas fell short of winning the team point for the doubles competition as both the #1 and #2 doubles lost 8-6.
In singles play, senior co-captain Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./ Immaculate Heart Academy) played a solid start-to-finish match, downing Pitt's Emmers 6-3,6-0. And teammate Boyle also notched a singles victory, defeating Jude 6-0,7-6. Co-captain Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla./ Ransom Everglades) continued her strong play as Georgetown's #1 singles player, but Pegula 6-4,7-5 narrowly edged her. The Hoyas valiant effort only netted two team points in the final score. Pitt captured the dual match, by a score of 5-2.
The Hoyas next face local rival George Mason on Saturday February 28 at the Army Navy Country Club in nearby Arlington, Virginia. On Sunday, Georgetown continues its BIG EAST Conference schedule with a visit from West Virginia. The Army Navy Club will also be hosting that match.
