WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senior All-America candidate Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) made her McDonough Gym curtain call a night to remember setting personal career records in both points (35) and rebounds (22) as the Georgetown women?s basketball team (12-13, 6-8) defeated Syracuse (6-18, 3-11) by a score of 82-59.
Brunson?s 35 points was a career high, and her 22 rebounds was not only her single game best, but also tied the Georgetown record for most rebounds in a game, previously held solely by Leni Wilson against Providence during the 1990-91 season. Brunson?s point total also put her in second place on the Georgetown all-time scoring list, with 1,696 points, surpassing Katie Smrcka-Duffy?s (1998-01) 1,671.
Georgetown started off strong, and led throughout the contest, outscoring Syracuse 41-28 in the first half. The Hoyas were paced by Brunson?s 23 first half points, and shot and impressive 44.4% from the field. The Hoyas did not stop in the second half, going on an 8-0 run to start the period, and effectively putting the game out of reach.
The Hoyas early second half rally was fueled mainly by Mary Lisicky?s (Jr., Whitehall, Pa./ Whitehall) three-point shooting. Lisicky finished the game 5-of-7 from three-point range, for a total of 23 points and had five assists. The five helpers allowed Lisicky to climb into the #7 slot on Georgetown?s all-time assist list with 304 in her career.
Senior Narumol Berggren (Stockholm, Sweden/ Vasalundgymnasium (Seminole Community College)) started her first game of the season on Senior Night and contributed two rebounds and an assist to the Hoyas? winning effort. Berggren has now played in 31 games during her two-year career at Georgetown.
The Hoyas hit the road to meet Providence on Saturday, February 28th, and finish up the regular season at Boston College on Tuesday, March 2nd.
