Hoyas Weather Hurricanes 80-64

Georgetown (13-6, 4-5) defeated Miami (13-10, 3-6) for the second time in seven days, this time winning at home on 2/07/04 by a score of 80-64. Gerald Riley paced all scorers with a career high 37. His previous career high was set in last week?s overtime win over the ?Canes when he scored 35. Gerald shot 67% from the field (12-18) 50% from beyond the arc (3-6) and a perfect 10-10 from the sin stripe. Brandon Bowman added 19 points while leading all rebounders with 9 caroms. Brandon also had 4 assists and led all rejectors with 3 blocks while playing every minute of the game. Darrel Owens added 13 points and paced all thieves with 5 steals. Courtland Freeman rounded out the Hoya quartet in double figures with 10 tallies.

            In the first frame the game was even through the first ten minutes. The Hoyas were forcing turnovers but the Hurricanes were dominating the boards. Then Miami put together a string of surges which saw them leading by 11 with 04:16 to play. The Hoyas reduced the deficit to 8 by intermission, (25-33) but left their fans wondering how GU would succeed against Miami?s height advantage.

            In the second stanza Georgetown increased it?s field goal accuracy from 38.7% (12-31) to 65.2% (15-23).  They also more than doubled the points they produced (25 in the 1st to 55 in the 2nd). Over the first 5 minutes of the half the Hoyas erased the ? time deficit. Then, GU spent the next 7 minutes on a 20-10 scoring drive to establish a double digit lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Over the final 8 minutes the Hoyas and the Hurricanes battled back and forth with the Georgetown lead reaching as high as 17 with 00:22 remaining.

            For the game Georgetown forced 24 turnovers while giving up 12. GU shot 50% from the field while holding Maimi to 41.2%. The Hoyas had 7 more assists and 2 more blocks than their opponents, but lost the battle of the boards 26-37.
