WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Hoyas men?s tennis team defeated Villanova by a 4-3 score on the chilled, windy McDonough Arena outdoor tennis courts on Saturday afternoon March 20th.
The Hoyas narrowly edged the Wildcat team by winning the doubles competition and splitting the six singles matches with wins at the top three singles positions.
In doubles, the Hoyas grabbed an early 1-0 lead with victories by the #2 team of Scott Faust (Miami, Fla./ Ransom Everglades) and Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla./ Melbourne Central Catholic) and the #3 team of Eric Conrad (Gloucester, Mass./ St. John's Prep) and Eddie Carver (Virginia Beach, Va./ Norfolk Academy). Conrad and Carver overcame a 5-2 deficit to win 9-7. Faust and Killeavy were in control from the start, cruising to an 8-1 win.
In singles, the Hoyas quickly won the three additional team points needed to secure the overall match victory as #1 Dennis Cravedi (Bethesda, Md./ Georgetown Prep), #2 Faust and #3 Killeavy all won their matches in straight sets, giving Georgetown an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Villanova fought back even though the overall match was lost. Nova won the remaining three singles matches, claiming both the #4 and #6 singles matches in three sets.
Having secured its first BIG EAST Conference win of the season, Georgetown travels to Blacksburg, Virginia to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies, nationally ranked #56 in the current NCAA Division I polls.
