The Scoop
Georgetown and Syracuse met just 16 days ago in Washington, D.C. The game was deadlocked for the first three quarters until Syracuse closed the game with a three-goal spurt to secure a 13-9 win. It was the second straight contest that Georgetown held a halftime lead over the Orange but was unable to close the matchup out. Syracuse has won seven straight over Georgetown. The seven game streak began the last time the two teams met in NCAA Championship action, the 1999 semifinals with SU winning 13-9 in College Park, Maryland. Georgetown?s other meeting with Syracuse in NCAA action came in 2000 with GU losing 17-13 in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Georgetown?s 15-8 first round victory against Towson was a showcase of defense and transition scoring and marked the third consecutive year GU has advanced to the quarterfinals. GU?s Neal Goldman led the scoring barrage with a career high five goals but it was the sticky defense of Andrew Braziel, Reyn Garnett, Brodie Merrill and John Trapp that got the offense kick started. In fact the transition game was working so well that Garnett and Trapp both were credited with assists after a caused turnover. The Georgetown offense is still keyed by the nation?s best face-off man, Andy Corno. Corno won 18-of-24 against Syracuse last time. Georgetown as a team is winning .688 of its face-off attempts.
Syracuse has won four straight including its 21-13 win over Albany in round one. In both of Cuse?s losses this year the Orange were held to 10 or fewer goals, with Johns Hopkins winning a 17-5 game and Rutgers recording a 14-10 victory.
