WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Georgetown University women?s soccer team (4-4, 1-0) fired 26 shots, putting 14 on goal and scoring 3 goals in a convincing 3-0 victory over the St. John?s Red Storm (6-1-1, 0-2), Friday September 24, on North Kehoe Field.
The Hoyas came out firing in the first half, putting 10 shots on goal in the period, and finally scoring 37 minutes in when junior Shara McNeill (Avon, Conn./Avon) rebounded her own shot and passed across the goal near the end line to sophomore Ali Hawkins (Cincinatti, Ohio/Jesuit) who tapped it in. The Hoyas added another goal before the break when senior captain Nicole DePalma (Theills, N.Y./North Rockland) found freshman Sarah Fetters (Coral Springs, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) in front of the goal for another tap in. Both Hawkins and Fetters had their first career goals for the Hoyas.
The Hoyas kept the momentum going, as two minutes into the second half junior Alexandra Hardy (Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly) added another insurance goal for the Hoyas two minutes into the second period off of a pass by senior captain Casey McCann (Mendham, N.J./Mendham). The Hoyas sat on their lead for the remainder of the game, cruising to a 3-0 win.
Hoyas goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) picked up her second shutout of the season, stopping three Red Storm shots. St. John?s goalie Jaime Beran had a busy day, stopping 11 Georgetown shots.
The Hoyas will complete their home stand on Friday, October 1
st at 4 p.m. against BIG EAST opponent Providence.
