Men's Tennis Hosts 24th Annual D.C. Metro Championships

9/29/2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Freshman Scott Maucher (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Bishop England) led the way for the Georgetown men's tennis team this past weekend as Georgetown played host to the 24th Annual D.C. Metropolitan Championships.

Competing against the Hoyas were teams from American University, Catholic University, George Washington University, George Mason University, Howard University, Mt. St. Mary's College, Goucher College, the University of Mary Washington, the University of Maryland Baltimore Country and Loyola College (Md.).

Maucher downed opponents from George Mason, Catholic, GW and Hoya teammate Eddie Carver (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) in his semifinal match-up to propel himself into the Singles Final of Flight C. That final was a Maucher victory as he defeated Michael Cardi (GWU) 6-3,7-5. Maucher also displayed fine doubles play as he and partner Jad Doyle (Yardley, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) advanced to the semifinals of the C Flight Doubles bracket.

Hoyas Alex Wright (Lexington, Mass./University of St. Andrew's (Scotland)) and Carver advanced through three rounds of the Flight C Singles bracket. Carver defeated opponents from Loyola, Catholic and Howard before falling to teammate Maucher. Wright defeated opponents from Catholic, Loyola and Howard before falling in the semifinals to finalist Cardi of GW.

Hoyas Eric Conrad (Gloucester, Mass./St. John's Prep) and Erik Bildman (Brookline, Mass./Roxbury Latin) advanced in the B Flight Singles bracket. Bildman picked up at first round win against Lamberton of Mt. St. Mary's. Conrad downed Hughes of GMU in his first round match and then took out the second seed, Jackson of UMBC, in straight sets in his second round match. Conrad lost his quarterfinal match to Schnell of American who then advanced to the singles final.

Bildman and Conrad also displayed their doubles prowess by picking up two wins as they teamed together to advance to the semifinal of the A Doubles bracket. After a first round win over George Mason?s #1 doubles team, Bildman and Conrad downed the second seeds from Mary Washington, Bristow and Hathaway.

Also Hoyas Etienne Paris (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and Ted Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) picked up a solid doubles victory over American's #2 doubles team in the Flight A Doubles draw. And in Flight B Doubles, the Hoyas had another upset victory as Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) and Wright downed the top seeded doubles pair from George Washington in the first round.

Georgetown posted an overall combined winning record for the tournament with 25 wins and 21 losses. However, the Hoyas were unable to make any progress against George Washington, American and UMBC, teams that defeated the Hoyas in dual match play during the 2003-2004 season. In D.C. Metro singles play against GW, AU and UMBC the Hoyas posted a 3-7 record. Against the other seven teams in the D.C. Metro singles play, the Hoyas went 16-6. Likewise, in doubles play, the Hoyas posted a 2-6 record against GW, AU, UMBC and Howard, while downing the other D.C. Metro teams to the tune of four wins and two losses.
