Georgetown Nipped by #7 Syracuse in OT

1/16/2005 Georgetown (11-5, 3-2) lost on 1/18/05 in overtime at the Carrier dome to 7th ranked Syracuse (18-1, 5-0) by a score of 73-78. The 23,485 on hand watched as Brandon Bowman paced GU?s scoring effort with 19 points, marking his 8th consecutive double figure outing and the 7th time he has led the team in scoring this season. Jeff Green, Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace each added 12 tallies and Roy led all rebounders with a career high 14 boards for his 2nd double-double. Green and Wallace each added 5 assists and Jonathan led both teams in steals with 3.

In a hard fought first frame neither team could put more than 5 points between itself and the competition. As soon as momentum began to gather an opponent hit a jumper to put the game back up for grabs. At intermission, Georgetown trailed by 4, 32-36.

The second stanza looked very much like the first, only closer. Again, neither team could distance itself from its opponent, but in this half the maximum distance was only 4 points. With the score 67-65 and 5 ticks on the clock, Brandon Bowman hit from the top of the key, but as his foot was ruled on the line, instead of a game winning three his shot took the game to OT. The game marked only the 5th extra period in 74 meetings between the Hoyas and the Orangemen.

In the extra frame the Hoyas missed some shots and some free throws while the Orange hit nearly everything they tried. The final was 73-78.

For the game the Hoyas shot 40.7% from he field while the Cuse hit 51.9%. The Orangemen grabbed 1 more rebound than the Hoyas while GU had 1 more assists.
