Women's Basketball Falls to Pitt in Fast-Paced Shootout

1/22/2005

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Georgetown University women's basketball team (6-11, 1-5) scored 81 points, its third highest tally of the season, but it was not enough as the Hoyas fell 85-81 at the hands of the University of Pittsburgh (11-6, 3-3).

The Hoyas started the game sturdily, leading by as many as nine points in the first half. Pitt came back toward the end of the period, tying the contest with 5:37 remaining. The teams played evenly for the rest of the period; with Pitt finally taking a 40-38 lead just before the period ended.

Pitt's two-point halftime lead proved to be decisive, as the Hoyas were unable to regain the lead in the second half. The Hoyas tied the game twice, but the Panthers eventually pulled away. The Hoyas mounted a solid last challenge, fueled by aggressive defense and a clutch three pointer by Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mount St. Joseph's), but a Katie Histed free throw with five seconds remaining sealed the game for the Panthers, 85-81.

The Hoyas lost despite double-digit offensive efforts from four of the five Hoya starters. Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) and Varda Tamoulianis (Moscow, Russia/Academy of Labour and Social Relations) shared the team lead with 17 points apiece. Marlow also grabbed 11 rebounds to record a double-double. Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) added 16 points including 3-of-6 from downtown, and Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) chipped in 12 for the Hoyas. The Panthers were led by their two post players, Allisha Morris and Marcedes Walker who scored 22 and 20 points respectively. Both players pulled down nine rebounds as well.

The Panthers slightly out shot the Hoyas from both the field (47%-44%) and the three-point line (44%-40%). The Hoyas shot particularly well from the free throw line, hitting 85% to Pitt's 75%, and Pitt won the rebounding battle, 40-35.

The Hoyas return to action in McDonough Arena on Wednesday, January 26 when they face the Pirates of Seton Hall at 7:30 p.m.
