Homecoming and the football game versus Fordham lived every bit up to its advance billing.
Alums of all ages from all parts of the world arrived on campus for the weekend including all-time Hoya fan Bob McDonough F'49 (as in the school, not the gym) shown here with Athletic Director Bernard Muir. Below, you can take in a few additional photographic sightings from the weekend.
First, a few more musings:
This game only further cemented GU-Fordham as our own football rivalry most akin to that of Lehigh-Lafayette or Army-Navy. What a spectator roller-coaster it was! Kudos to our second-half offense and to the defense of Ononibaku, Obiako, Paulus and their posse for all but a three minute stretch at the end of the first half.
Last week's post about the mutual mascot Homecoming raids with Fordham long ago has been chronologically corrected thanks to help from former Hoya editor, past Hoyas Unlimited prez, and current HoyaSaxa.com maven John Reagan. Muchos gracias, John.
A few weeks back, I took a look at the soon-to-be renovated Ellington track. What it will be is a running track for practice. That means no field events at Ellington. While watching a recent soccer game however, I was surprised and happy to see a makeshift long jump pit in use on the north end of Kehoe. It just might warm the heart of former star jumper and Hoya coach Ray Humphrey '87 to see this temporary pit in action. Well . . . then again, that might be too far a leap.
My picks for most interesting contests this coming week:
> M&W Cross-Country: The ninth-ranked men and the 31st-ranked women head to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx for the Big East Championships on Friday. Men will try to overtake fifth-nationally ranked Notre Dame. Women will seek to beat fourth-nationally ranked ND, 16th-ranked Providence and 29th-ranked Marquette.
> Men's Soccer: The Hoyas (9-7) will play the final two games of the regular season. On Wednesday, they face a must-win match (for hosting rights in the conference tournament) versus Pitt (3-10-1) on North Kehoe Field. The booters finish with 6th-ranked UConn on Saturday night in Storrs.
> Sailing: The Hoyas' depth will be evident next weekend as the women and the coed teams are entered in five different regattas at Harvard, Princeton, Norfolk, Michigan and Washington, DC.
> Field Hockey: In the second game of a season-ending four game home stand, the Hoyas (3-11) will face UMBC (2-12) on Wednesday in a very winnable contest before closing with Cornell (9-5) and Vermont (5-10) next Sunday and Monday, respectively.
Last week, the Hoya athletic teams posted an overall win-loss record of 4-6 and earned a 6th, an 8th, a 10th, a 19th, and a 29th place finish in standings competition.
