Bronx, N.Y.- The Georgetown University women's basketball team came up a bit short in a 68-62 overtime loss at Fordham University on Wednesday evening. The Hoyas, who played into OT for the first time since January 14, 2004, fall to 3-2.
Junior forward Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's) scored a career-high 22 points while senior guard Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) notched a season-high 17 points. Sophomore guard Kristin Heidloff (Chicago Ill./Fenwick) matched a career-high with eight assists.
Georgetown rallied from a nine-point second half deficit with the help of six Carlin jumpers, including three three-pointers, to take a 47-46 lead with 6:40 left in regulation. LeSueur hit a driving layup two minutes later to give the Hoyas a 49-46 edge with 4:30 left.
The lead would change hands twice more before Georgetown took a 53-52 advantage on another LeSueur jumper with 20 seconds left.
The Rams would call timeout to set up the final play. Fordham got the basketball into the post where Stacey Price was fouled with 2.2 ticks left. Price, a graduate-student center, missed the first free throw before getting the second to tie the game at 53-53.
In the extra session, the game was tied at 55-55 with 2:07 to go but GU would only score on three of 12 field goal opportunities in overtime while the Rams made three of five shots from the floor while hitting nine of 11 from the charity stripe for the win.
The Hoyas made eight of 21 foul shots while Fordham converted 16 of 24 free opportunities, including nine of 11 in the overtime session.
Fordham took their largest lead of the first half into the locker rooms, 34-27 as the Rams made seven of 12 three-point field goals in the opening period. Three of Fordham's final four field goals were from long range, including a three-pointer from Lisa Carrol with just two seconds remaining.
Georgetown returns to action again on Saturday, December 3 when the Hoyas host Appalachian State at McDonough Arena at 3 p.m.
