Monday Morning Musings

December 12, 2005

On Sunday morning this past weekend, a throng of Hoyas assembled on the parcel located across Reservoir Road from the GU Hospital. There, Athletic Director Bernard Muir and Track & Field coach Ron Helmer welcomed the team, staff, and alums to the new official practice home of the Hoyas, a 320-meter four-lane synthetic track.

Team captains led a small entourage of joggers on a ceremonial lap around the new oval. The remainder of the Hoya tribe were given the choice of jogging or walking. They walked (including the rest of the team). I like to think they all wanted to savor the moment as long as possible. Alumni from each decade of the past fifty years participated.

Next Saturday's game against Stetson University is the second of three December games for Georgetown in three separate venues that comprise the Hoya segments of the Hispanic College Fund Classic.

The Hispanic Classic is considered an exempt tournament, meaning the Hoyas and the other teams involved count all their games in this tourney as one game against the NCAA limit of scheduled games. Oregon, Stetson and Savannah State are Georgetown's opponents in the convoluted and extended format of this tournament that has teams playing two, three or even four opponents. Because the tournament is an exempt event, experimental rules are being used, including a wider free-throw lane, a three-point line a foot farther from the basket, and an area under the basket limiting offensive charging fouls, similar to the restricted arc in the NBA.

"Cognoscetis Veritatem et Veritas Liberabit Vos." Most undergrads from 1970 forward have walked under this Latin inscription set over the entrance to Lauinger Library. Translated, it says, "Learn the truth and the truth will set you free." This week is exam week on campus and when I visited the library archives today, it sure felt as if every Georgetown student was in the building seeking their freedom, if not the truth. Adrenaline hung in the air. Wide-eyed caffeine addicts buzzed from one floor to the next. I just tried to stay out of their paths. And I had almost forgotten what the Advent season means for the college generation.

Just over 100 days ago, this Hoya sports blog made its first appearance. Yesterday, the number of visitor hits reached 10,000. While "eyeballs" are the oft-cited measure of success in cyberspace, I prefer a different part of human anatomy: "Smiles." Thanks for reading.

My pick for most interesting (and only) contest this coming exam week:

> Men's Basketball: The Hoyas (3-1) host the Stetson Hatters (0-7) next Saturday evening at 7:30 pm in McDonough Arena. Very limited seating for this non-season ticket game.

Last week, only the Hoya basketball teams were in action. They posted an overall win-loss record of 1-2.
