Georgetown Ranked No. 8 Nationally by Lacrosse Magazine

Dec. 29, 2005

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's lacrosse team was ranked No. 8 in the country in preseason rankings released by Lacrosse magazine recently.

The rankings, compiled by Lacrosse magazine staff with consultations from coaches and other members of the press, tabbed Duke as the preseason No. 1 team in the country.

The Hoyas return eight starters from a team that went 10-5 last season, advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Georgetown is one of only two schools in the country (Johns Hopkins) to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals in each of the last four years and is one of only three schools (Johns Hopkins, Syracuse) to reach the NCAA Tournament in each of the last nine years.

Leading the way for Georgetown will be senior midfielder Pete Cannon (Haverford, Pa./Haverford School), who had a breakout season, scoring 22 goals with nine assists for 31 points last season. Cannon, one of the team's captains, led the squad in scoring, earned honorable mention All-America honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and was a second-team All-ECAC selection. He became the go-to Hoya in the latter part of the season. Cannon scored Georgetown's game-tying goal in the NCAA Quarterfinals against Maryland in the final minute and put together a career high four-goal effort at UMass. Cannon has played in every game of his three seasons, seeing action in 45 contests and totaling 30 goals and 12 assists.

Cannon will serve as a captain along with senior defender Reyn Garnett (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Deerfield Academy). Garnett suffered through an injury filled junior season at close defense but persevered and earned his first All-American honor. Garnett was a leader on a defensive unit that ranked among the top-20 in the country in goals allowed, played in 12 games and contributed 37 ground balls. He earned honorable mention All-America honors from the USILA and was a second-team All-ECAC selection.

Also back is junior midfielder Trevor Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep), who scored 21 goals and had nine assists for 30 points, senior attacker Sean Denihan (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset), who had 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points, and sophomore attacker Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./Haverford School), who had 15 goals and eight assists for 23 points last season.

Georgetown opens the 2006 season on Saturday, February 25, hosting Maryland at the Multi-Sport Field on the Hilltop.
