The Scoop
Both Georgetown and Syracuse are coming into tonight's contest after securing big victories over the weekend. The Hoyas won for the first time on the road at Providence last weekend by scoring 87 points on their way to a 57-point victory, the largest margin ever by a GU team in a conference showdown. Meanwhile the Orange upset Villanova at home, 45-42, by holding the Wildcats to just 34% shooting and limiting the normally deadly shooting three point team to just one tri-fecta in 14 attempts. The series between GU and SU is as close as it gets with SU owning a one-game advantage, 21-20. The Hoyas are on a three game win streak against Syracuse, including an 82-59 win last season in D.C. and a 70-66 win in Syracuse during the 2002-03 campaign.
Georgetown sits in 11th place currently in the BIG EAST standings with a 2-6 league record but GU is one-win away from the four teams that sit in seventh through 10th. Georgetown's Kieraah Marlow is the reigning BIG EAST Co-Rookie of the Week after recording her BIG EAST leading ninth and 10th double-doubles last week. Marlow continues to lead GU's scoring and rebounding columns, posting an average of 13.2 ppg and 8.7 rpg. Marlow, Varda Tamoulianis and Bethany LeSueur are the only Hoyas to have remained in GU's starting lineup all season. Tamoulianis ranks second on GU in scoring with 11.6 and LeSueur ranks third with 8.4. All combined the three "full-time" starters produce 52.9% (33.2/62.7) of Georgetown's scoring.
Syracuse snapped a three game losing streak with the 'Nova win this past weekend. SU owns a 3-5 conference record with its other league wins coming against Providence and Pittsburgh. Chineze Nwagbo is the only Orange player who averages double figures with 11.6 points a game. Freshman Vaida Spiaviciute is a promising 6-4 first year player, she is the only player in the conference ahead of GU's Tamoulianis for blocks with 50 and averages 7.3 points and 4.3 rebounds.
