, VA - The Georgetown University men's baseball team (0-1) dropped their season opener to William and Mary (1-0) 21-11 Saturday February 12, at Plumeri Park. Senior catcher Andrew Cleary (Weston, Mass./Bellmont Hill School) led the Hoyas, scoring three runs and tallying seven putouts.
Georgetown broke out to an early 5-0 lead after sending nine men to the plate in the top of the first, but the Tribe cut right into that by scoring four in its half.
The Hoyas stretched its lead to 7-4 in the second and added another in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead, but W&M answered in the sixth and took their first lead of the game at 9-8.
The College's lead did not last long as the Hoyas responded by plating three runs to grab the lead back in the top of the eighth at 11-9 after runs scored by senior captain Jim Supple (Summit, N.J./St. Peter's Prep), junior Danny Gronski (Sammamish, Wash./ Skyline), and Parker Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman). The Tribe's offense took over in the eighth, as it sent 15 men to the plate as it scored 12 runs to take a 21-11 lead, which was the final.
Georgetown reliever Michael Halloran (Canton, N.Y./William), the third of five Hoya pitchers, was charged with the loss. He allowed three runs, all earned in one-plus innings of work.
Tribe freshman right-hander Jake Rule picked up his first career win as he surrendered just two hits while striking out two in an inning and a third of work.
The two teams will meet again in the series finale tomorrow
afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Plumeri Park.
