Georgetown Record BIG EAST Conference Victory over Pittsburgh
Georgetown downed Pittsburgh by a 6-1 score to open their 2005 BIG EAST Conference schedule with an important victory. Georgetown hopes to qualify for the BIG EAST Conference Championship for the first time since 2000, and the opening weekend win against Pittsburgh keeps them on pace with their goal.
Georgetown fell behind in the match during the doubles competition as Pittsburgh won the #2 and #3 doubles matches to secure a 1-0 lead from the doubles competition. But the Hoyas were especially resilient and their determined play yielded six singles victories. Steph Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) led the way with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #2 singles. Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) chipped in with a 6-3,6-2 win at #3 singles. The clinching fourth team point came from the racquet of Adriann Gin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) a 6-2,6-4 winner at #4 singles. Liz Winkour (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) went on to win a closely contested #1 singles match 7-6,6-4. The final two Hoya wins went to three sets as Kristin Dew (Nashville, Tenn./Webb School) won 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at #5 singles, and Sana Malouf (McLean, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School) won 6-7(5), 7-5, 10-8 at #6 singles.
