WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Georgetown University women's basketball team (9-12, 4-6) breathed new life into its season by picking up its third straight BIG EAST win, a 71-65 decision over the Mountaineers of West Virginia (12-8, 3-6). The Hoyas three game winning streak marks the longest of the season and as of today moved the Hoyas up to eighth place in the conference from the 11th spot.
The game was hard fought throughout, with neither team ever gaining a double-digit edge. The first half went back and forth with the Mountaineers finally building a six-point lead towards the end of the period. The Hoyas kept their composure, however, and trimmed the West Virginia lead to 35-31 going into the break.
The contest remained close until the eight-minute mark when the Hoyas finally hit a turning point. In the midst of a Mountaineer offensive drought in which they turned the ball over on 6-of-7 possessions, Mary Lisicky (Sr., Whitehall, Pa./ Whitehall) hit back-to-back three pointers. Lisicky was also fouled on the second, converting for a four-point play and sending WVU sharpshooter Meg Bulger to the bench with her fourth foul. The play put the Hoyas up eight, and while the Mountaineers would cut the lead to one, they would never recapture it.
Lisicky had her best game of the season for the Hoyas, scoring a season high 19 points and adding four rebounds and four assists, one coming after hustling for a loose ball and dishing it to Bethany LeSueur (Jr., Garden City, N.Y./ Garden City (Virginia)) for a layup from her back. In addition to Lisicky's 19, three other Hoyas scored in double figures. Varda Tamoulianis (Sr., Moscow, Russia/ Academy of Labour and Social Relations) scored 15 before fouling out, LeSueur scored 14 and Kristin Heidloff (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) added 13, by nailing 4-of-4 three pointers. Kieraah Marlow (Fr., Coatesville, Pa./ Coatesville) grabbed a game high 12 boards for the Hoyas and had four assists.
The Mountaineers were led by Olayinka Sanni with a game high 21 points and Bulger with 18. Sanni also led the team in rebounds with 10.
The Hoyas slightly out shot the Mountaineers from the field (46-44%), and won the rebounding battle 36-33.
The Hoyas travel to South Bend, Indiana next weekend to take on #6/7 Notre Dame on Saturday, February 12th. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
