Hoyas Fall to Local Rivals in Men's Tennis

2/8/2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Georgetown University men's tennis team traveled to the University of Maryland and to the Naval Academy this past weekend to compete against two quality regional rivals.  The Terrapins proved too much for the Hoyas, winning 7-0 but the following day, Georgetown gave the Naval Academy all it could handle in a match that would be decided by mere points, with Navy ultimately prevailing 5-2.

Highlights of the Maryland match included a close doubles point, as well as excellent attempts by freshmen Ted Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) and Andy Clayton (Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall-St. Mark's).  Playing at numbers four and five respectively, both stretched their opponents to three sets before faltering in the 10-point tiebreakers played to decide the third set.

In doubles, seniors Eric Conrad (Gloucester, Mass./St. John's Prep) and Erik Bildman (Brookline, Mass./Roxbury Latin) broke serve twice to put the Hoyas ahead with an 8-4 win.  Navy responded by winning at number two, and eventually won the hotly contested doubles point with a 9-8 (8-6) win at number three.  In singles, sophomore Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) was off the court first, easily winning 6-3, 6-2 at number one, equalizing the match at one.  Navy responded with wins at numbers three and four, putting them within one match of the team victory as three matches continued.  Junior Alex Wright (Lexington, Mass./University of St. Andrew's (Scotland)) gave the Hoyas a second point with a 6-1, 6-4 win at number six.  Needing to win both remaining matches to take the team match, Bildman and Clayton both battled back after losing first sets to take their matches to deciding sets.  Both played solid third sets but were ultimately not successful.  Bildman lost 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3, and Clayton was within points of the match before losing 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.

The Hoyas are off next weekend and return to action Feb. 20 in a home match against Rutgers to be played at the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, Virginia.
