WASHINGTON, DC - The Georgetown women's volleyball team is already gearing up for the 2005 season. In preparation for the upcoming fall season, Head Coach Li Liu has named next season's captains. Rising seniors Rachel Nelson and Ashley Lancaster, and junior Annie Connor have been selected as tri-captains for the Hoyas for the 2005 season.
Nelson and Lancaster, who both play at the outside hitter position, have been strong influences both on and off the court in past seasons. Connor, the junior member of the trifecta, has been consistently improving her play since her freshman year.
Coach Liu has said that "Nelson provides leadership through her consistent performance during both practice and competition", and describes Lancaster as "a fighter" who she hopes to see take a large leadership role. Connor got the nod in large part because Liu sees her as "a true leader on the team".
Lancaster finished third on the team in kills last season with 215, although she battled injuries throughout the season. She led the team in aces with 28, and was fifth in digs with 171. Nelson was just behind Lancaster in kills with 209, despite dealing with wrist injuries that sidelined her during the season. She tied Connor for second in aces with 24 and was fourth in digs with 172. Connor was second on the 2004 squad in total blocks (101) and aces (25). She also posted 205 kills, 68 digs and 24 aces.
