Georgetown missed the game winner in the closing seconds of the BIG EAST Quarter Finals, allowing the #12 ranked Connecticut Huskies to squeak out a win, 62-66. Ashanti Cook, whose trey in the final 30 seconds bounced out, paced all scorers with 17 tallies. Brandon Bowman added 15 and led the Hoyas' rebounding effort with 6 boards. Darrel Owens added 13 points and Jeff Green threw in 11 more to round out the quartet of Hoyas in double figures.
The game was fairly even through the first 10 minutes (GU trailed by 3 with 8:33 remaining), however the Huskies were able to build an 11 point edge with 2:22 left in the half. Georgetown cut this deficit back to 6, 26-32 by intermission. For the Half the Hoyas shot 41.7% to Connecticut's 56.0% and were outrebounded 9-17.
In the second session GU trailed by as many as 13, but never gave up. A late scoring drive saw GU trailing by 5 with 2:46 remaining. A trey by Owens made it a 2 point game with 00:40 remaining and after Gay missed the front end of a 1+1 with 00:25.1 on the clock the Hoyas had their shot. Unfortunately, Ashanti's attempt was unsuccessful, D.Brown made two from the stripe with 00.01.5 on the clock and the Hoyas failed to advance.
Despite losing the battle of the boards 19-33 and allowing Connecticut to hit 54.0% from the floor and 54.5% from beyond the arc, Georgetown came within inches of upsetting the 12th ranked Huskies.
