Hoyas Go 2-0 In Baseball Double Header Against Yale

March 12, 2005

Box Score

FORT MYERS, FL - Thanks to superb pitching in the first game and strong hitting in the second, the Georgetown baseball team defeated Yale 1-0 and 12-4 in a doubleheader at the spring training complex of the Boston Red Sox in Fort Myers, Florida. The wins improved the Hoyas record to 8-5 and dropped the Bulldogs to 1-5.

The first game went into extra innings as it was scheduled for seven innings but reached the bottom of the ninth. Ryan Craft then belted the ball to deep rightfield for an RBI triple, scoring pinchrunner Derek deGrijs from first for the win.

The game was a battle between starting pitchers Michael Gaggioli of Georgetown and Yale's Josh Sowers, but neither figured in the decision. Gaggioli went seven and one-third innings, striking out seven Bulldogs and walking two. He gave way to Michael Halloran (2-1) in the eighth, who struck out two and did not allow a hit to pick up the win.

Sowers struck out nine Hoyas in seven innings, walking two and scattering eight hits. Brett Rosenthal (0-1) came in to begin the eighth and struck out two in his first inning. He retired the first two batters in the ninth, but Bill Quinn drew a walk and was replaced by deGrijs before Craft's winning drive.

The Elis twice got runners to third, Zac Bradley in the fifth and Matt Stone in the sixth, but Gaggioli came through both times with strikeouts.

Josh Zabar made his first start of the year for Yale and went 2-for-2 with a stolen base and a walk. Craft was 3-for-4 for Georgetown, and leadoff man Parker Brooks had two hits.

In the second game, Yale led 4-1 until the Hoyas reeled off 11 unanswered runs before the game was called due to darkness in the eighth.

Bradley put Yale up 1-0 with some first-inning small ball. He led off the game with a walk, reached second on a Marc Sawyer single, stole third and scampered home on a passed ball. Zabar extended the lead to 3-0 in the next inning with a two-run homer to left center, plating Jake Doyle, who started the frame with a double.

GU shortstop Matt Johnson, on his way to a 3-for-3, three-RBI game, knocked in a run in the bottom of the second, but Yale came back with another in the third.

It was all Hoyas after that. Georgetown scored two runs in the third and two more on a fourth-inning triple to right by Quinn to go ahead for good at 5-4. The Hoyas had 19 hits in the game. Leftfielder Mark McLaughlin led the way with a 4-for-5, two-run performance.

Sawyer and Stone each had a pair of hits in the game for the Elis.

The Hoyas Travis Danysh was credited with the win. Mike Elias suffered the defeat in relief of Steve Gilman, who made his first start as a Bulldog.

The Hoyas will face Yale in the final game of the three game series on Saturday, March 12 in Bradenton, Florida. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
