Men's Tennis Wins Over Villanova and Swarthmore

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Georgetown University men's tennis team won two straight matches on the road in Philadelphia over the weekend, defeating Villanova on Saturday, March 19th and defeating #15 Swarthmore on Sunday. The Hoyas are now on a three match-winning streak.

Georgetown opened the doubles competition at Villanova with solid starts at #1 and #2 doubles. Villanova countered with a very fast start at #3 doubles. And although Nova won the #3 doubles match, Georgetown won both the #1 and #2 doubles matches to stake out an early 1-0 lead. At #1 doubles, Erik Bildman (Brookline, MA/Roxbury Latin) and Eric Conrad (Gloucester, MA/St. John's Prep) won by an 8-3 score. At #2 doubles Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, FL/Melbourne Central Catholic) and Scott Faust (Miami, FL/Ransom Everglades) won 8-3.

Holding a 1-0 lead as the singles competition began, Georgetown stretched the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1,6-1 win by Conrad in the #4 singles match. Nova countered with a win at #1 singles. Georgetown then responded with a win at #3 singles as Killeavy won 6-0,6-4. Villanova then claimed the #2 singles match in straight sets before Georgetown clinched the decisive fourth team point as Faust won the #5 singles match 6-4,7-5. Theodore Tywang (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) completed the last match of the day for the Hoyas, a 6-4,6-2 win at #6 singles. The final score for the match was Georgetown-5, Villanova-2

Sunday afternoon the Hoyas returned to the court to take on the Swarthmore Garnet on their home indoor courts, the Mike Mullan Tennis Center, named in honor of their current head coach.

Georgetown claimed two of three doubles matches to open the competition and post a 1-0 lead. The Hoya #1 tandem of Bildman and Conrad won 8-6 while the #3 team of Andrew Clayton (Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall- St. Mark's) and Scott Maucher (Mount Pleasant, N.C./Bishop England) won 8-3.

In singles, Killeavy made quick work of his opponent at #3 singles, winning 6-1,6-3. Swarthmore recovered to tie the score by winning the #1 and #2 singles matches in straight sets. Georgetown then proceeded to win the remaining three singles matches in straight sets. Conrad made quick work of his opponent at #4 singles, winning 6-0,6-4. Faust again clinched the team victory with a 6-4,6-1 win at #5 singles. Tywang claimed the final Hoya victory of the day, a well fought 6-3,6-4 win at the #6 singles position.

The Hoyas will face the defending Atlantic 10 Conference Champions and 2004 NCAA Team Championship qualifiers, the University of Richmond Spiders, Wednesday, March 30 at the McDonough Courts at 2:30 p.m.
