MORGANTOWN, WV. - The Georgetown University baseball team (14-10) split a BIG EAST doubleheader with West Virginia University baseball team (9-14) on Saturday, March 26, at Hawley Field, losing the first game 10-4 and winning the second 9-5.
The Mountaineer bats came alive in the first game on the afternoon as the team scored its 10 runs on only 13 hits. Lee Fritz paced WVU throughout the game as he went 3-4 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs. Chad McKown also came up big with three RBIs and a run scored including a two-run homerun.
West Virginia started the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a flurry of extra base hits. Kuhn led off with a triple to left field and was then knocked in by Casey Bowling's double to right field.
Justin Jenkins stepped to the plate next and sent a hard shot to the outfield for a double and moved Bowling to third. Fritz kept the runners moving as he hit a double on the very next at-bat to make the score 3-0. The Mountaineers would not be done though as freshman Michael Burger would hit a two out single to score Fritz.
Jenkins and McKown would take the spotlight again in the fifth inning with a pair of home runs. Jenkins would lead off the inning with a bomb over the left centerfield wall. After a Fritz single McKown belted a two-run shot to the same area Jenkins had just one batter before.
The Hoyas struck back in the top of the sixth inning. Hoya outfielder Billy Quinn started the inning off with a single that split the infield. Junior Ryan Craft followed the single with a deep homerun over the rightfield fence.
A Timmy Jones double would then be followed by a hit batter to put two runners on for second baseman Parker Brooks. The Las Vegas, Nev., native cranked a double to the outfield that scored the two base runners and made the score 7-4 heading into the bottom of the inning.
WVU closed the door on the Hoyas in the bottom of the sixth though as the trio of Jenkins, Fritz and McKown would combine for three RBIs to make the score 10-4.
Sophomore WVU pitcher Wes Osbourn (3-1) came away with the win after throwing 5.2 solid innings on the afternoon. Todd Dunham came in for relief for WVU and threw 1.1 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out two. Georgetown's Michael Gaggioli (2-1) took the loss. Gaggioli pitched 5.2 innings, allowing eight earned runs off ten hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader Georgetown was able to redeem itself by scoring a run in six of its nine at-bats.
The Hoyas opened up the game by scoring a run in three of the first four innings including a lead off homerun by Jones in the top of the fourth innning.
WVU closed the gap to one run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kyle Matuszek knocked in Jenkins on a sacrifice ground out to the second baseman and Stan Posluszny hit a double that scored McKown.
Georgetown first baseman Ryan Craft would increase the lead back to three though as he hit a two-run homer off pitcher Kenny Durst in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-2.
The Mountaineers would draw closer again in the bottom of the inning with a pair of RBIs from McKown and Posluszny, but a David Carpenter ground out to second base would leave three runners stranded and end the West Virginia rally.
The closest the Mountaineers would be able to get after falling short in the fifth would be 7-5 after McKown knocked his second home run out of the park. Georgetown ended scoring on the evening in the top of the eighth inning with a pair of RBIs from Quinn and Jones.
Rhodes (0-1) took the loss for WVU in the game as he went three innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out two.
Junior Stephen Burns (3-2) went the distance for Georgetown as he allowed five earned runs on five hits and struck out five batters.
